Homesick is the first side quest that you come across very early in the Caverns, the area for Chapter 4: Dark Descent in Valor Mortis. This one, like The Scarecrow quest that you would have come across in Chapter 2: Regroup, also tells a short story about how civilians got impacted by the war; and will have you look across a few places to collect specific items, and then return with them here.
In this guide, I have put up all the details on how to begin, progress and complete the Homesick side quest, along with the rewards you get for this.
How to Start the Homesick Side Quest

Pick up the letter just down the road from the first Lantern in Chapter 4: Dark Descent, to unlock the Homesick side quest. This is just after you have the blue Echo. Here, you come across a family waiting for the husband/father to come and pick them up.

The Second Echo

From the Lantern, if you have opened up the shortcut, go straight and right into the open area with the waterfall. If not, then from the Lantern, continue into the enemy arena, stick to the right, and take the opening at the very end to land up in the same spot as shown in the image above.

We learn that the mother sent both her kids to the Market place so that they don’t die of the sickness other folk in the caverns were presumably falling prey to, and promises to join him once her husband rescues her from this place. So, the camp that we encountered, was in effect, the last refuge of the mother all alone, since she had sent her son away from here at this point.

Final Step
The next progress in the quest will come when you make it to the area with all Boats. This will happen as part of the main quest progression and is unmissable. Here, continue till you take care of the Grenadier, and loot the Lucky Shot Amber.

From here, continue further ahead and you will spot a lone boat in the distance.

There is a dead body with a letter. Read the letter, where you discover the sad truth – that the husband succumbed to typhus. The person who was sent to deliver the letter also met an unfortunate end, and hence Weronika kept waiting for her husband to come.
The only thing now left to do is go back to the camp where you first picked up the quest (straight run from the Last Sunlight Lantern), and communicate out loud what is written in the letter. You don’t need to interact or initiate this, William automatically does this once you arrive in the area. Walk around a bit if it does not happen right away. This winds up the quest, and you receive Bottomless Well Amber as a reward.
If you have already collected the Bottomless Well Amber from Chapter 1: Revival, then this will upgrade it to Level 2.
