In Valor Mortis, most of the trophies are either those on defeating specific bosses, or completing specific combat challenges, or, side quests like Laudanum, Seamus Diggory, and Unheard Farewell. However, the Frenzied Flame trophy is quite different – about lighting the bonfire in the castle.
The very specific Dark Souls reference aside, you would first think that it could possibly be the pyres / beacons that you have to light to get the castle gate to open in Chapter 9: In Ruins. Turns out, that’s not what this is about. If you are looking at a platinum, and this trophy is where you are stuck at – here is how to get the Frenzied Flame trophy in Valor Mortis.
Frenzied Flame Trophy in Valor Mortis
The path to lighting the bonfire is to the right of the Traverse Lantern in Chapter 9, on the route where you have constant cannon shots that you have to time and run in between to get to a safe spot. This side of the Lantern holds a full section worth exploring, and looting, and it is here, at a very particular place, where you have to light the bonfire and get the trophy. Here’s how you reach this place:
Step 1: Getting past the cannon fire
Facing the Lantern, move to it’s left. You will see two soldiers coming in, and get blown by the cannon fire. Get an estimate of which is the safest spot that is as near to the cannon fire as it can be, stand there and wait.
As soon as the cannon fire is done, run, and make your way to the second safe spot, which I have shown in the image above.
From here, the next run is right to the top. Again, standing there, start the run as soon as you see shrapnel fly in your direction. Get to the top, and prepare immediately for a fight with Howlers and a Lancer. Once that is done, loot the poison filled cells for a Remnant’s Return.
You will also likely see an Iron Marshall make his way to you, take him out, and now go to the path on the right side of where you made a run from. You will see an enemy with his back turned to you, take him out.
Step 2: Activating the Chapel Lantern
Get to the ledge – when you land, you will fall through it – that’s ok; you will not take any health damage. Take the left, and defeat the Iron Marshall.
Clear the Nephtoglobin on the right which leads to a path outside; and pull the blue Node to open up the Chapel Lantern. Burn the Vines and take the path down to arrive in a room with lot of barrels and crates.
Step 3: Final route from Chapel Lantern to the Frenzied Flame location
Take the only path there on the right, with the poison filled area below you. Clear this level of the Carrion and the Spewer, and get the Stasis Clad Rounds on the right edge of the area. Use the Shield Transmutation to get through the poison filled part on this level, and loot the Nephtoglobin Vial.
If you want, you can clear out the Carrions from the lower level, and then step down to collect some loot. There is a Stasis Whetstone, and a narrow crawl space that leads to an Imperial Catalyst Clot.
Once done, move to the right across the bridge, and use the Nephtoglobin Wall on the left to jump over the wall. Here, defeat the Experiment 83 regular enemy, and the Spewer above. Collect the Refreshing Vial and Flaming Whetstone, and take the ladder on the right.
Now, there are 4 things here:
- Steps leading to a level above behind you
- Steps leading to an open area with chains leading down into the sewers
- A closed door that requires a key to open
- A Nephtoglobin Formulation that you can use to swing over to a ledge, with a door.
Take the 4th one, that’s where we need to go for the Trophy unlock. Defeat the Howler, and get the Flaming Whetstone. Now, from here, continue the path that goes down.
Here, on your left, there will be Vines, which, once you burn, reveal another set of steps going down. Take those, and you will arrive into a large, cavernous hallway.
On the left, there’s just one open cell – the one that houses the flame. Give it a bit of fire, and the Frenzied Flame achievement/trophy in Valor Mortis is all yours.
