In Valor Mortis, after you arrive at an open area with a bridge on your left and several trams or railway coaches flung in all directions, you will hear a voice seeking help. It is time for the first side quest in Valor Mortis. And like all good side quests, there are two ways in which you can close this quest – both with (an admittedly slight) change in rewards.
If you are looking for a way to get all the information on the soldiers dispatched by the Adjutant-Sous Officer in Valor Mortis, here is a complete walkthrough of the quest – including how to start as well.
How to complete An Unheard Farewell
Speak to the Adjutant-Sous Officer stranded on an overturned tram here. He will tell you that he needs help figuring out what happened to the scouting party that was sent ahead.

From here, follow the path down the bridge. There are lanterns placed helpfully to guide you to your path. You will see another coach in the distance. Do the double swing and enter it, to get the third tool in your arsenal – the pistol; along with some bullets nearby.
You are now ready to take your first shot. As soon as you go to the window to get outside the coach, the enemy will spot you. Crouch / hide behind the wall of the coach, wait for the sound of the gun being fired, and then, while he is reloading, take your shot. It may take two to take him down.
With that done, proceed ahead to the next platforming section. Once you get to solid ground, you will have two riflemen at a distance. Either get them from ranged shots at a distance, or sprint across the tree bridge to take care of the one on the right – the one on the left will not be able to get a shot here. Then dispatch the other enemy, and rest at the Lantern.
Here, you will see two red nodes to be destroyed to unlock the elevator on the left. Once that is done, use the elevator and proceed to a point where it stops.

Now, note two paths – the one straight ahead where you have to crouch, and get in; and the other one exactly behind it – where you have to burn away the barrier. Take the path straight ahead first, and burn the enemies that mob you. You can also burn a lantern to cast a flame AoE – just ensure that you don’t get caught there.
William will remark that this is what has become of the soldiers – and the quest will get updated to check if there is at least one soldier alive.
Now, turn back, and take the other route – burning the barrier. The enemy here is a tough one to take on early – so be careful. He will generally do 3 swings, get in and attack for a couple of times and move out. Use your Fire Transmutation to burn him and do tick damage. He will also get staggered a bit, helping you land in a few attacks when he is fully on fire.

Once the enemy is taken care of, you will see a note on the other side, read it to update the side quest- where you get a choice whether to tell the truth to the Officer or lie. Don’t forget to loot the chest nearby to get Pure Blade Material * 1. Take the ladder and proceed ahead.
Jump down, and watch out for the enemy on your left. Continue the linear platforming path ahead, keep an eye out for the 3 riflemen up ahead. The path ahead will take you to a ladder on your left, unlock it to lead back to the Lantern and the Officer.
An Unheard Farewell – Rewards

If you tell the truth, you get:
- Sleight of Hand Amber
- Epic Catalyst Clot
If you lie, you get:
- Sleight of Hand Amber
- Remnant’s Return
The Sleight of Hand Amber reduces the reload time for all firearms, and increases speed of weapon switch; while the Remnant’s Return gets you all your catalysts that you lost when you died. It is a one-time use item, though, and does not replenish when resting at a Lantern.
