After the fight against the Sphinx boss at the end of Chapter 4 in Valor Mortis; you end up, once again, in the Abandoned Church. On speaking with Louis and James, you are tasked with going to the Laboratory in the City to collect Louis’s notes, something with James is increasingly not comfortable with. He starts having doubts on Louis, but reluctantly hands over the Outward Pass Key that opens up the next area to explore in Chapter 5: Crime.

Beginnning Chapter 5 | Wolfsbane Field Lantern
Make your way using the Grapple, and this time go straight to open up the gate that leads to the university. You get transported, like in other chapters to your open zone area. The developers seem to have used this level as a showcase that they can do bright and sunny as well as dark and grimy.
As you make way to your first Lantern, you come across a pedestal that clearly serves as a worship platform. William remarks that this is the first time he is seeing something like this. Save at the first Lantern – Wolfsbane Field.
Make your way to the set of houses ahead, and instead of the main path, take a left. The leftmost cabin has a Legendary Catalyst Clot. Come out of the cabin, and take the ramp on its left which allows you to get on to the roof, and from there to the cabin in front of you. There is a Grenadier waiting to ambush you as you come along the main path, but it so happens that we are not.
The Lost Boy Side Quest Begins
Take him out with a (Backstab + Blunderbuss). Head down and kill the enemy on the left. The door on the first cabin is locked, enter the second one and read the note on the table to begin The Lost Boy side quest.
Go to the first floor, listen to the blue Echo, then go out into the open balcony to see a Nephtoglobin to shoot in the cabin across the road. Jump down and collect the Epic Catalyst Clot from the shed next to that cabin.
Continue along the only path available to you, and jump across to the next set of cabins. There are a couple of enemies that you see ahead, and one enemy on the left waiting to ambush you. Enter the cabin, and read the note. The Shrike is apparently calling in for people to join the Resistance against Napoleon’s army. Enter the shed on the right to get Standard Firearm Parts.
Now, there are two paths – the one on the right leads to a dead end with an Epic Catalyst Clot to collect at the end, so take the path on the left. Now, here as well, you will see 2 paths, and unlike the ones that we just saw, both do lead somewhere.
Equivalent Exchange Amber
Take the straight path ahead to progress the side quest, and also a tree with a Nephtoglobin that you can shoot to bring it down, and unlock a shortcut. This tree now leads you to the lone soldier that you backstabbed early on.
In this cave, the path that winds upwards leads you to a fight with a Red Eye Sapeur, and gives you the Equivalent Exchange Amber on defeating him. You will also find a key here that progresses The Lost Boy side quest. The area also has Pure Blade Material and a Cleansing Vial to collect. The Equivalent Exchange Amber allows you to use your Health Pool as Nephtoglobin.
The Wound That Heals Amber
Take the Cellar Key back to the cabin that you had found locked. This cabin has The Wound That Heals Amber, and a note that concludes The Lost Boy side quest. This Amber gradually restores health over time.
With this part done, we now move our attention to the other path at the branching point to progress the main quest. You can attempt to take the shiny on the wrecked boat – it is Crude Blade Material. Once that is done, take the ladder and jump over to the other side to kill the enemies. You can then get back over, burn the Vines to expose the gear mechanism, and then get working on the (Lever + Stasis) combo. Do this such that both the white cloth covered crates are in line for you to jump over to the platform on the left.
From here, you will finally see the Nephtoglobin, shoot it to open up the path that was previously blocked with the huge thick purple vines on the main route. When you make your way there, you will see the Iron Marshall boss that you defeated at the end of Chapter 2. It should be an easy one here, as you are now stronger and more battle-hardened.
Under The Bridge Lantern
Continue ahead, shoot the tree with the Nephtoglobin to create a ramp to help you cross over. Before taking the ladder down, grab the Legendary Catalyst Clot. There are three enemies between you and the second Lantern of Chapter 5 in Valor Mortis – a Sapeur, a Swordsman, and a Lancer. Either take them out, or make a run and jump across to safety.
Next to the Under The Bridge Lantern, Lucjan shows up again. Complete the conversation, and save if you want before proceeding ahead.
The Deserter Side Quest Begins
Now, jump straight ahead where you can see the shiny, and shoot the Nephtoglobin high above on the left. Swing across the ledge under the bridge, take the Flaming Whetstone on the left, and then continue right.
Continue on the straight path, and pick up the note that unlocks The Deserter side quest. Going ahead, take the right first, and listen to the blue Echo, it builds context for another side quest that we will be picking up soon.
Now take the other path with the shrine to Shrike on your left.
In The Name of Art Quest Begins
You will see another path on the left exactly next to the two enemies. Take that path, watch out for the ambush from the right. There are a bunch of enemies in this area. Once they are disposed, then grab the Pure Blade Material. On the path, you will then fall down – but no damage done.
Take the Legendary Catalyst Clot, Pistol Cartridges, and then the ladder up ahead. Turn back, and walk down to end up at the place where you had fallen down from. Take the Mythic Catalyst Clot. You will arrive at the house which looks like it belongs to an artist, what with all the canvas and other painting material kept outside.
The door is covered up with vines that you can’t do anything about. So move ahead, towards the shiny which happens to be an Epic Catalyst Clot. Shoot the Nephtoglobin from the lit window on the left, to unlock the main door.
Continue to the first floor, where interacting with the painting next to the Artist who looks to have taken his life to begin the In The Name of Art side quest.
Perfectionism Amber
Now, return to the path where you took a left to pick up the side quest. There are two things to pick up here. First, go to the end of the path, and take the note which progresses The Deserter side quest. Next, take the Grapple across to face a tough opponent as part of The Deserter quest. Defeat him to get the Perfectionism Amber.
Now, retrace your steps to where you fell down the hole and climbed the ladder back. The route to this point is going past the Artist’s cabin, such that the door to the cabin is on your right. You will come across bodies strewed across, a corpse lying against a carriage, and the ladder that you used to climb up on your left.
Stick to the left, the right side leads you to the next section in Chapter 5, but before that, use the ladder on the left to open the shortcut back to the Lantern.
Getting the Musket
With that done, let’s tackle the camp. As you enter, you are treated to a familiar site – with a Volunteer guarding a coach. The Volunteer here is armed with some sick looking curved swords. The (Fire Transmutation + Blunderbuss) combination works just as fine on him, though, and you get the Wagon Key on defeating him.
Use the Wagon Key to unlock the entrance to the coach. Now, finally, time for the next addition to our Arsenal – this time we get a Musket – the Sniper Rifle variant of the times. All those Musketmen who were shooting at you across large distances, now have something coming their way as well!
Just remember – the Musket is a two-handed Firearm, so if you are wielding it, you will not be able to have any melee weapon equipped simultaneously.
Before exiting from the other side of the coach, though, lets grab the loot from the right and left areas in between the tents, always watching for ambushes. Grab the note, and the blue Echo on your left, which tells us about the new soldiers, and of some precious cargo. Both these references will come across frequently in notes and echoes in this area.
Grab the Epic Catalyst Clot. Now take the second left, and follow it to the end. Don’t get distracted by the corpse on the ground and the right turn, as on your left you will have a Volunteer charge at you with his two-handed sword. Enter the open area past the Volunteer to get Superior Firearm Parts, and then loot the Crude Blade Material from the right after taking down two other enemies.
Poisoned Camp Lantern
We have cleared this area, and can now proceed through the coach to exit from the other side and save at the Lantern – Poisoned Camp
Treat the next section as training grounds for using the Musket, as you will have a host of enemies at a distance that will snipe on you, and whom you can now snipe back on. After taking them out, you can use the ladder, which has a path going to the left and right.
Take the right path from the ladder. Shoot the Nephtoglobin to open up the area below to your right. Go there, and right below the elevated platform that you were standing on in the image above, is a chest containing Pure Blade Material. Now lets take the left.
Snipe the enemies including the Volunteer from afar with your Musket, go back to get more ammo if required. Shoot the Nephtoglobin as I have shown in the image above, to open up the route back to the Wagon, and from there to the Lantern.
Lucky Shot Amber
Now, turn right from here to spot a chest. The chest is exactly behind the newly opened route to the coach. The chest is a new type, it will explode on opening, so be careful. Loot it to get the Lucky Shot Amber. This Amber, when equipped, gives you a small chance that the Firearm ammo remains unused.
Continue ahead, and there are three left paths which lead back to the coach. The first has a Note which again talks about the importance of the cargo being carried by the troops being essential to the success of the campaign. The second left has Mighty Rounds in a tent at the end on the right. There is nothing on the third left, so take the ladder.
Before that, just ahead on the right, you will see a well lit camp with a note. Now take the ladder, and unlock the ladder straight ahead. This ladder leads you right back to the camp opening, where you first faced the Duellist Volunteer. On the other path that winds to the right, you will get a birds eye view of what awaits you in the next segment.
Here, you have an Iron Marshall, but one who can lob deadly grenades that cause massive AoE. Note the ladder on the left, which opens up a shortcut to a Lantern. Also, you would see explosive barrels placed along the path of the enemy. Shoot them to take out half its health from afar. See if you can get a hit on the weak spot on it’s back to take out another nice chunk of its health, and then jump into the fray.
Once it is defeated, unlock the shortcut that leads back to the Under The Bridge Lantern. Do keep in mind though, when you make your way back here to progress, the enemy will respawn.
Ferrofluid Power Upgrade 1 of 2
Rest, climb up, defeat the Iron Marshall. Now, get into the building through the roof, using the ledges and Nephtoglobin Wall. Inside, use the (Lever + Stasis) combo to open up the passage. Unbolt the door, and make your way through the gates that you just unlocked on your right. Make sure to collect the Ferrofluid Power Upgrade from the chest right next to the gears that you applied Stasis on.
The next area has a set of cabins on both sides. Explore them to get blue Echoes and Notes which further talk about Shrike, their attempts to poison the water, the precious cargo of the Emperor, and the new soldiers.
When you arrive at the area that I have shown in the image above, destroy the crates on your right. This will lead to a platform on the left that leads to a cabin from where you can conveniently snipe and take down a majority of the enemies patrolling the open area. On the right of these crates, is a cabin, the first floor of which has Standard Firearm Parts.
Now, the open area has three paths / points to focus on:
- The central area has an Empty Ferrofluid Flask, and a lot of enemies with explosive barrels on their routes
- The left area has an alternate route to get you into this battlefield, and involves climbing a series of ledges and shooting down a Nephtoglobin – all on the leftmost path
- The right area, touching the stream on the rightmost side, has another alternate route that can bypass this entire enemy area; and take you to 2-3 bridges on the other side of the arena.
We will clear out the central area, though, since it has an item of keen interest for us – the Empty Ferrofluid Flask.
Empty Ferrofluid Flask
With that out of the way, take the left path from the crates, and into the cabin. From here, there are three open balconies or ledges. First, observe the rightmost one. It shows another path that we will be taking soon. For now, let’s concentrate on clearing the open area.
Use the explosive barrels, and your Musket. Bait the remaining enemies to come to you. Once you have cleared this area, get down there, and loot the chest right in the middle that contains Empty Ferrofluid Flask.
Leftmost Path: Now, go to the left edge of this area, and you will see a path that goes straight ahead, with a Nephtoglobin thread running alongside on your right. You will come across a ledge that you can swing over to loot a chest on the other side, containing
Retrace your steps back to the main area, following the exact path that you just took, and continue ahead, you will come to the spot I have shown in the image above.
Take a right, and use the ledges to get on to the roof of a building, from which you can clear the Nephtoglobin.
I have put another image above from the roof where you shoot the Nephtoglobin. As you can see this is the leftmost side of the open area. Shooting the Nephtoglobin clears up the route to the building in front. Use the ladder in that building, listen to the blue Echo, and unbolt the door to lead into the main area. This is an alternate route to the one that we took for clearing out this area.
Rightmost Path: With this, we have cleared everything that we need to get here. Now, remember the path on the right that we viewed from the cabin overlooking the open area? It is time to tackle that. What you have here is a series of ledges that take you to a chest with a Volunteer guarding it. The narrow space available makes the fight tougher than it should be. Once he is out of the way, loot the exploding chest to Superior Firearm Parts.
Dilated Moment Amber
Now, retrace your steps, and stick to the rightmost path, with the open area littered with enemies on your left. Continue ahead, cross the bridge with the water wheel on your left, and you will come across a chest containing the Dilated Moment Amber; and a Note from the Shrike rallying its supporters to seize the precious cargo. This Amber slows down time when aiming, but consumes Endurance and lowers Firearm damage.
Ship Graveyard Lantern
Now, take the only bridge that has a sort of a wooden gate marking it different from the other 2. From here, the left path leads to a chest with Pure Transmutation Material and a Note talking about stolen valuables. The path on the right leads to a Grapple point across to the next Lantern – Ship Graveyard.
NephtoGlobin Formation Ability
Continue ahead, and you will know it is time to learn a new ability – Nephtoglobin Formations. This gives you the power to activate Nephtoglobin Formations into convenient bridges to climb on, shields to protect from enemy fire, and ledges to swing from.
Bay Cave
Before we progress on the main path though, lets take a quick detour through Bay Cave.
With our new ability, we can explore the path on the right of the Ship Graveyard Lantern as well. Activate the Nephtoglobin Wall, and enter the cave. You can use the Nephtoglobin in the cave to take down enemies from the falling rocks that they trigger. Collect a Remnant’s Return on the other side. Defeat all the enemies including a pretty manageable Iron Marshall, and collect the Distilled Blade Material from the chest. Finally, loot the Mythical Legendary Clot. With that, we are done with this cave, and can return back to the Lantern.
The next section, predictably, is an area where you get to implement all these one by one. Proceed along the linear path, collect the Crude Transmutation Material. Watch out for the segment where you have multiple Musketmen on both sides. Use the shields wisely to ward off one side, take out the enemies from the other; and then swap over.
Once they are killed, use the Grapple on your left and continue crossing over the broken bridges. Take care of the Volunteer from a distance, and the Spewers above on your right. Get the Epic Catalyst Clot, shoot the Nephtoglobin. This then opens a path back to the Lantern, across the Grapple and jumping across the floating planks.
Ferrofluid Power Upgrade 2 of 2
Go and rest there if you want, else continue on the main path. Use the Grapple Point to make your way into the next ship. Turn around, and shoot the Nephtoglobin. Take the Standard Firearm Parts. Go below the deck, clear out the enemies, and grab the Ferrofluid Power Upgrade.
Then, take the Epic Catalyst Clot and then use the Grapple Point at the other end of the ship, to see a massive wreck. William comments that this is possibly the cargo that the rebels will looking for. Read the Note next to the dead soldier – turns out that the rebels couldn’t seize the cargo, so they chose to destroy all of it – which lead to all the poisoning that we have been reading about.
Old Windmill Lantern
Continue on the linear path, till you start now hearing the voice of the Shrike, apparently, in your head. Keep grabbing all the collectibles on the way – Cleansing Vial, Protective Vial, Pistol Cartridges, Make your way to the final Lantern of Chapter 5 in Valor Mortis – Old Windmill.
SlaughterMill Boss Fight
And now, it is time, for let’s just say, a very, very different boss. You will be fighting a house. A large house that snaps at you with giant claws, releases Carrions, AoE waves, among other things. Once defeated, move ahead and collect the note to progress The Emissary side quest.
This completes Chapter 5: Crime in Valor Mortis, and automatically lands you in the next Chapter 6: Punishment and region – The Cursed Hollow.
