After the terrifying and difficult run with that sliver of a health (and several deaths), you finally make it to the last Lantern in the game with a big sigh of relief, as all the weapons, Transmutations, and health that you have earned through the campaign are returned to you.
And all of this will be needed for the final battle against The Entity – a 2 phase boss fight that has you pulling in everything that you have learned and mastered. It is not an easy fight, however, there is a way to break down the movesets and plan your strategy and build to make it manageable.
Here is how to defeat the final boss – The Entity – in Valor Mortis.
Preparing for The Entity Fight

Level: Anywhere between 53 – 55 should be good enough. This will ensure you have adequate points to activate a few key skills.
Weapon: Take the one you have become most comfortable with. We will not be parrying here at all, so does not matter.
Firearms: Pistol – only for a specific boss move.
Transmutation: Both Fire and Stasis work well. If you have been using 1 of these pretty regularly, pick that. If not, I would recommend Fire – that is upgraded to get the increased duration of Burn status on every melee attack node.
Skills: Ensure that the ones on Increased Nepthoglobin drop on melee attacks is maximized. The next priority is on increasing damage of Transmutations, since that will be the primary source of damage dealing.
Amber: Pick the following for sure
- Dilated Moment – Slows time when aiming, at the cost of Endurance and Firearm damage
- Limit Break – Converts excess healing into temp max health
- Lunatic’s Grasp – Increases status affliction at the cost of reducing resistance to these
- Bottomless Well – Restores Nephtoglobin over time
Entity Moveset & What to do in each case
Let’s go through his moveset in detail, as well as what to do in each of these.

Two rapid slashes + Thrust / Jumping Slash – He will do two rapid slashes, then hold his pose for a time, and either do a thrust, or a jumping slash – both of which are red glowing attacks. The Jumping Slash is a great opportunity to dodge and get a good counter in. If it is a Thrust, go in and attack with a few thrusts of your own once his attack is done.

Five Slashes – He will do what looks to be a 2 slash attack, as there will be a long pause, but then will continue with another three. The key is to wait and not dodge when he has paused the attack chain, so that you have Endurance left. In some cases, he will transition to a Claymore for the 4th and 5th move, in which case the last one will be a big, jumping swing that can cover a lot of distance.
Claymore Throw – He will throw the Claymore at you, teleport to it, and pull it out – causing major damage. Strafe left / right when he does the throw.

4 Bullets Fire – He will jump back and create some distance (not ascend), and whip out his Pistol to do a 4 bullet attack. Dodge in line with the timing of the bullet shots.

Fire Transmutation – He can also pull out a Fire Transmutation just as damaging as yours – more in fact, especially with our lower resistance. Quickly dodge back 3-4 times to be out of range.

Shadow Summon – Whenever he ascends, get the Pistol ready. If it turns out to be a Tentacle attack, you can dodge, and revert back to Fire, but if it is a Shadow Summon, use the Dilated Vision to take out the Shadows. The time slowing mechanism ensures that the boss is not able to attack you when it is triggered.
Tentacle Attack – This is when he ascends, and is the easiest to avoid, as you would now pretty much be used to this. In Phase 2, he calls in 4 tentacles instead of 2.
Phase 2

When he transitions to Phase 2, is when things get frantic. For one, he starts this phase by calling in several shadows. The shadows, in this phase, however, are not restricted to just copies of him – he will also call in a guest list of all the bosses you have faced. These also die in one shot, it’s just that you have to be constantly aware of the arena and quickly taken them out.

The second change is the combos – he will chain one into the next, into an almost unending sequence of slashes, swipes, and thrusts. Keep your distance and get the Fire / Stasis Transmutation on him. On Fire, he will get staggered for a sec when the Burn status gets afflicted on him, while in Stasis, you have to wait for the full meter to get filled before you can go and get your big hit in.
Strategy for defeating Entity
- The Entity is a 2 phase boss fight, and is going to be a fight of gradually whittling down his health, rather than being aggressive. It will be a long fight – so conserve health potions and only take limited and clear opportunities to deal damage.
- Keep accumulating Burn / Stasis -> Melee attacks to restore Nephtoglobin (& extend Burn status) -> Dodging his attacks till Nephtoglobin is replenished for Burn / Stasis is the core strategy here.
- This is as much about conserving Endurance as it is about attacking. The boss has long combos, especially in phase 2. We will also be using the Dilated Moment, which consumes Endurance.
- All those consumables that you have been saving up on? Phase 2 of this fight is finally the time to use everything that you have – don’t hold back, this is the last fight after all.
- You are easy game if you panic dodge. The boss combos have a lot of delays in between attacks, and if you don’t pause running or dodging then; you will not have anything left when the attack hits you.
- Also, the boss hits you like an absolute truck. A couple of hits and you will be staring at the game over screen. Don’t be afraid to chug a potion even if you are only 30%-40% health down – we have the Limit Break Amber, so it does not go waste.
- When the boss ascends in the air, get as much distance as you can. It will be either of the two attacks – either the tentacle attacks like in The Slaughtermill fight (2 in phase 1, 4 in phase 2 – again, exactly like that fight), or he will call his shadows. In either case, you will get time to dodge, or aim and shoot.
- Don’t treat the shadows lightly. They hit as hard as the boss, and have been the cause of my death more times than I would like to admit. Oh yes – the boss does not stop attacking, so do keep an eye out on him as well.
This is the phase to use all your Nephtoglobin Vials and Refreshing Vials. Once you have finally defeated the Entity, enjoy the cutscene, and the final ending of Valor Mortis. The game then allows you to continue spending time and complete trophies you may have missed, like the Frenzied Flame, for example.
