Once you arrive at the Abandoned Church after defeating General Lothaire at the end of Chapter 2 in Valor Mortis, you get greeted there by James, who clearly knows William very well. After showing around the Church a bit, he then requests you to help find Louis, the resident Medic. At this point, finally, the fast travel options to previously visited Lanterns opens up; as does the Upgrades Bench.
Once you are done upgrading your Sabre & Pistol, head towards the left exit to begin Chapter 3: Rendezvous.

Chapter 3: Regroup Begins – Cemetery Section
Go straight, open the path, grab the Standard Firearm Parts. There is nothing currently ahead, so turn back, and take the path (now) on your left. Take the first right, and the steps leading down.
Here, there are 3 routes – the left one is filled with poison, so nothing to be done there. The right one has Crude Blade Material to collect, and then a dead end. The central one is locked from the other side. Turn back, and go straight to grab the Uncommon Catalyst Clot behind the statue.
Getting the Rapier
Now, take a left and head to the more open area, and there is something clearly of interest as you see a similar set up to when you got the Fire Transmutation back in Chapter 1. This time, you don’t get a Transmutation, but a weapon – The Rapier. It is great for swift thrusts, attacking weak points, and parrying, though does slightly lesser damage than the Sword, and takes sometime getting used to.
Move ahead, and you will have some enemies to work with the Rapier. Take a left, and shoot the Nephtoglobin to get a Legendary Catalyst Clot. Then take the second left to collect an Uncommon Catalyst Clot.
Go straight, take care of the two enemies, and from the branching path, take the right first, and collect an Uncommon Catalyst Clot at the very end. Now, return back to the branching path, take the left this time, and just before you exit the Church, you will see a Nephtoglobin on the right. Behind it is Crude Blade Material.
We are now done with all the collectibles in the Church area, moving ahead will take us to the Fallen Village – the main area for Chapter 3.
Entering the Fallen Village
Defeat the lone enemy, and you will spot a shiny on your left. Approach it carefully though, there are 3 enemies that are in the distance. Either stealthily approach them and take them out, or unload the Fire Transmutation. Afterwards, collect the Rare Catalyst Clot.
Continue ahead to find the Lantern, and our friend Lucjan. Speak and complete the conversation with him, and then move ahead.
The Scarecrow Side Quest Begins
You can walk among the fields, and do exactly that, hugging to the left. You will come across a gate that is currently closed from the other side. Grab the Epic Catalyst Clot, and make your way back to see a Scarecrow and a blue Echo in the field on the other side of the path.
Interact with it to begin The Scarecrow side quest.
Now run back to the Lantern, and this time hug the right boundary to get 2 collectibles on this side of the area. The first is Standard Firearm Parts and then a Hand Grenade next to a dead soldier against a log.
Now, enter the barn, take the ladder up ahead, then right, till you see a ledge you can use to swing over. Then, jump down, destroy the crates blocking the route, and collect Crude Blade Material. Now, go to the other side, and come out of the barn.
Three enemies with scythes will rush at you, so be ready with the Fire Transmutation. The scythe wielding enemies have two attacks – 4 wild swipes, and jump attacks. The jump attacks are easily parried, while for the swipes – it is best to dodge. The swipes really hurt if you get caught – you will mostly be stunlocked till the entire 4 attacks are through.
Unbolt the door on the left, which opens up the shortcut to the Lantern. This is the same one that we had come across as a blocked door from the other side. If you are facing the route to the Lantern, take a right and collect Whetstone.
Now, make your way ahead. The left leads to a dead end with a Rare Catalyst Clot to be grabbed from the corpse. On the right, be ready to take on an enemy wielding a rake. These will either do rapid thrust attacks, or charge at you from a distance. Ensure that you dodge as soon as the charge begins to stay completely out of their attack hitbox.
Another enemy will hurl axes at you – again, dodge those, and get close to him to take him out. The last one is sitting next to the carriage, besides the shiny. Take him out first, and then grab Rare Catalyst Clot. The carriage with the crates also contains a Whetstone, so remember to take that as well.
Now, move ahead, and you will see cattle with the orange blister. Shoot it and that will take out the enemy mob that was planning to attack you. If you miss, when they rush and pass in it’s vicinity, it will burst on it’s own – the games’ way of signalling that you better not do that!
Use the boards as a ramp, and do a Plunge attack on the enemy. Go to the right, among the grass, to collect Epic Catalyst Clot. Ensure that you shoot the orange blister, as these will explode on their own if you come in their vicinity, and take off a decent chunk of health.
Now, there is an axe throwing enemy on the right, one with a scythe on your left, and the area is a minefield with dead cattle carrying the orange blisters. So, tread carefully and don’t rush in to attack the enemies. You can crouch and approach the enemy with the scythe on your left, backstab him, and then take the other one out.
Take the Epic Catalyst Clot, after shooting the orange blister on the dead cattle. Straight ahead, you will have this game’s version of the Psycho from Borderlands, who run at you like an exploding bomb. Take those out before they come too close.
Now, there is a path that leads to the right, and one that goes left. The right one has a soldier to defeat and Deadly Rounds to loot. But, also a red-eyed Grenadier. So, best avoid this since you would be running low on potions by now.
Instead, take the left, shoot the Nephtoglobin, and open up the shortcut route back to the Lantern.
Ferrofluid Power Upgrade 1 of 2
Save, and return to the route that you have unlocked. On the well to your left, you will get the Ferrofluid Power Upgrade. This Chapter has 2, the other one is after we arrive at the next Lantern. The door on the building to the the left is closed, we will be opening that soon.
Proceed ahead, take out the Rifleman, and prepare for the fight against the Red Eye Grenadier. Bait him to the clear area on the main path, and try and get a clear shot of the Grenades bag. This will wipe out more than half its health. I strongly recommend equipping the Rapier, it will hit it’s weakspots on the left arm, and whittle it’s health down.
The next area in the fields is again filled with enemies, the dead cattle with blisters, and a villager armed with a flaming torch – if he spots you, he alerts everyone nearby to make life difficult for you.
The area between the first and the second entrance has an enemy with a scythe on your right, and three minefields – 1 on the left, and 2 on the right.
Post the second entrance, you will spot the one who alerts nearby enemies straight ahead. Bait them towards the minefields, and take them out one by one. There are three enemies here – 2 scythe-wielding and a rake-wielding enemy who attack you.
If you approach this area slowly, and immediately take a left, you can take the rake-wielding enemy out of the equation by backstabbing him. Take the Nephtoglobin Vial from the carriage here.
As you progress, you will again arrive at branching roads. The one on the left leads you to the building with the blocked door. You can unbolt the door, and that opens up the shortcut back to the Lantern. The building also has the second item that you need to progress The Scarecrow side quest. Collect it from the first floor along with the Hand Grenade on the bed.
Completing The Scarecrow Quest / Bountiful Harvest Amber
Now, retrace your steps to the branching path and take the right one. Here, watch out for the ones that charge at you with the orange blisters exploding, and also for the one who alerts them. After you clear this area, you will notice a carriage you can use to climb on to the barn on your right.
If you have collected both the items for The Scarecrow, and returned it to him, come back to this spot and enter the barn. This will complete the side quest and get you The Bountiful Harvest Amber. If any of the steps are pending, you will not have anything to work on for now on the first floor.
Volatile End Amber
The same barn has several of the orange blisters on the ground floor. Take them out from a distance, and once all are cleared, loot the chest to get the Volatile End Amber.
Continue ahead, till you spot a building with a glowing sign. On it’s right will be a cart with the Nephtoglobin. Shoot it to crash into the building and open up the door for us.
You will come out to an area with a broken bridge, that you can still jump over. The house there, however, will be locked, and will need a specific ‘Weathered Key’. We will be getting that soon.
For now, take the path on the right. As you approach the shiny, a rake-wielding enemy will ambush you. Take him out, and pick up the Rare Catalyst Clot.
The area ahead has the same irritating torch-wielding guy who alerts everyone – in fact, two of those. Their paths, however, take them very close to a lantern kept next to the orange blister. Shoot the lantern from a distance to take one out, if not both.
There are 2 enemies that remain – one with the scythe and one with the rake. Take them out, and then move ahead.
You will come to a branching path – the one on the left is guarded by a rather intimidating enemy – moreso since you are likely out of healing potions. The right one, thankfully, opens up the shortcut back to the Lantern. Operate the lever left of the gate, save at the Lantern, and then retrace your steps back here.
Getting the Blunderbuss
Now, prepare for a tough fight. The Volunteer has fast swings with very little tell. Dodging is best early on, once you get used to the moveset, you can attempt parrying. Also, the red glow attack has a couple of feints, you would think it will land but he just keeps holding the attack, so don’t dodge early. Hand Grenades are useful to whittle down his health.
Once you have defeated him, you can enter the carriage behind it to get your next firearm – the Blunderbuss – a shotgun that is devastating at taking down groups of enemies at short range.
You may have noticed a path that winds to the right as you approach from the Lantern to the now open gate. For now we don’t have the tools to go there, so ignore it.
Enter the carriage from where you picked the Blunderbuss, and exit it to unlock a Lantern. Save there, ready your Blunderbuss and unload it on the enemy mob attacks you.
Enter the barn from which they attacked to loot a Rare Catalyst Clot. Exit from the window, there will be a Carrion enemy on the left, and a Crude Blade Material ahead.
The barn has a ramp that you can use to go to higher ground, and you will see that it drops into another area. We will come back here in a bit, as we first need to get the second side quest for this Chapter. For now, unlock the ladder.
The Lullaby Side Quest Begins
The path on the right is broken – though you see a blue hanging orb above, so ignore it for now. Instead, go to the building in front of you with a lantern hanging outside the door (if you are starting from the save point, it will be to your left). You will hear a sound of a baby crying. Enter the other room, and The Lullaby side quest will unlock and get added to your Quest Log.
Take the Flaming Whetstone, and exit from the door outside to see a couple of enemies guarding something. Take them out, and loot the shiny to get The Weathered Key. We can now unlock the cabin on the other side of the broken bridge that we came across some time back!
That will get you a Toy to place in the crib in this house, and complete The Lullaby side quest, also giving you.
We can now use the ladder to drop down to the next area in Chapter 3. Get the blue Echo, and proceed ahead (the door next to it is locked) to the central marketplace area.
Central Marketplace Area
Now, this area has a lot of enemies in the open area – a Volunteer and couple of Rifleman patrolling the circular area, a Grenadier and 3-4 soldiers knocking on a door, and a couple of other ones as well. Thankfully, there are also a series of ramps that can largely get you through without taking these enemies on. However, there is loot to collect here, so we will need to get our hands dirty and clear out the area.
For now, enter the open door on the left, which will lead you to a ladder placed as a ramp. Use that to jump on to the building.
Use the boards to go around it, and then to the roof of the next building. Plunge attack on the enemy below, and backstab the other who is facing the other side.
Enter the building, defeat the enemy, and exit carefully. There will be two enemies, and you can backstab both if you don’t rush out. There will be an enemy sitting next to the well, ensure you don’t miss him.
Stick to the left, to collect Deadly Rounds, and enter the building with the lit candles as well as a ladder. Use the conveniently placed ladders to go across the roofs. Here, note the enemies banging on the door on your right.
The Warrior’s Fury Amber
In the next building, collect Crude Blade Material from the room on the left, and step out on the balcony to see a tempting chest straight ahead. It is, a trap. The floor will give way, and you will land up right in front of the mob that you just saw a while back.
Either do a (Blunderbuss + Fire) combo – or quickly dash to your right into the cabin with all the lit candles. Mostly, the Grenadier will follow there first as the Riflemen make their way slowly, and that will make taking the group out easier. Use cover, as it is likely that a couple of other enemies will also join the fun and try and get you.
With the enemies defeated, go back and loot the chest to get The Warrior’s Fury Amber. Exit from the door on the left, to get on the ground, and unbolt the door on your right.
Ferrofluid Power Upgrade 2 of 2
Now, exit towards the bell from the house where the enemies mobbed you. Below the bell, on your left, will be a chest. Loot it to get Pure Blade Material. Also loot the Standard Firearm Parts next to the stream.
Now, just opposite here, you will see a few crates. Destroy them to reveal a chest, that has the second and final Ferrofluid Power Upgrade for Chapter 3.
Follow the path that winds upwards, and you will see a Volunteer heading down that path. You can cheese him by doing a backstab as he turns around, then de-aggro him, and again backstabbing him. After he is down, make a run along the path if you are short of health potions, ignoring the enemies to unlock the Lantern.
The Iron Marshall Boss Fight
Up ahead is your second boss fight in the game, with a lumbering brute of a boss – the Iron Marshall. His attacks can easily wipe out half of your health in one shot, but thankfully he only has 1 phase, and a limited moveset unlike your previous boss fight with General Lothaire.
I have put up a detailed guide with the recommended setup, and strategy to take down the Iron Marshall here. Once you defeat it, you get the ability to now Grapple Hook, or pull open blue nodes. This will now help you gain access to areas that were previously out of bounds to you. For example, the path next to the house where you got The Lullaby quest.
The game immediately lets you try this out by giving you a run of 3-4 such blue nodes, where you can grapple your way to the Lantern. Save there, and prepare for a short but frantic run to our main objective of searching for and rescuing Louis.
Finding Louis
The next section is made tougher because the fire and smoke make it difficult to see where to proceed next, and also reduce enemy visibility (of course, without, in any way, reducing your visibility to the enemy!). Here’s how to get through this section and complete Chapter 3 in Valor Mortis.
Use the first Grapple Point – the whole objective is to use this and time your jump to do a Plunge Attack on the enemies below. It looks great when you pull it off, but not so much when you land up right in front of a Volunteer and he takes you out in a couple of attacks!
Move ahead, and on the winding path on the right, grab the Standard Firearm Parts. Use the Grapple ahead to get into the building on the right, but not before grabbing the Epic Catalyst Clot right below the Grapple point.
Take the Crude Transmutation Material from inside the building on the floor, and then exit the other end. Use the Grapple to then quickly move to the opposite building. Approach the enemy facing the other side from the extreme right, as the floor will give way. Take the Special Cartridges on your left that can be accessed from the ladder, and then proceed ahead.
Now, from this building, you will see the 2 Grapple hooks lined up, take those and get across to the building.
Take the exit to see an open field with 4-5 enemies, and a ladder up ahead, then a narrow board on the left, and down to the final Lantern of Chapter 3 in Valor Mortis.
We are now in the last section. Louis is in a building which is exactly behind the central tree structure with Grappling hooks on either side. The problem is the enemy placements. You cannot open the door if you are in combat, and there is a Grenadier guarding the entrance, in addition to Riflemen, a Volunteer, and other enemies.
First, backstab the soldier that walks by. Then, bait the Volunteer, and take him out. Next, grapple onto the right roof to take care of the Rifleman. This will alert the Grenadier, who will follow you. Bait him to fight you one on one in the area with the Lantern. With him taken care of, take out the Rifleman on the other roof, and any stragglers left.
Our path to Louis is now finally open! Speak to him and he will accompany you to the Abandoned Church. With this, Chapter 3 in Valor Mortis is done.
