So, you would have probably seen gameplay videos, reveals, or written articles about how Valor Mortis aspires to be a first-person soulslike, with combat that is a mix of melee, Bioshock-type special powers, and guns. However, you are through the tutorial / prologue Chapter 1: Revival; and into the second mission; with no sign of any firearm coming your way.
The natural question that will arise is – did I miss it? The answer is no – you get your first firearm in Valor Mortis, but not in the first quest. Read on to get to know when.
When Does the Pistol Unlock in Valor Mortis
The Pistol, your very first firearm, unlocks midway through Chapter 2: Regroup. Continue progressing till you arrive at The Demolished Path Lantern. This is the one with all the rail coaches flung about, and where you hear an Adjutant-Sous Officer requesting you for help.
Agreeing to him unlocks the ‘An Unheard Farewell’ side quest. It is a good idea to do this – as the paths for both are the same. Once done, continue ahead to the destroyed bridge. Thankfully for us, there are still convenient ramps for you to drop down, or jump down to. The distances early on may look intimidating, but William is pretty nifty, and will make the jump as long as you line it right. This is also helped by lanterns kept at key places to guide you.
After the first 4 or so jumps, the next one will have an enemy looking the other way. You can jump on behind him and quickly press R2 to trigger an assassination. Ensure that you use the overhanging ledge to jump across, if you try a direct one – you will take health damage and the enemy will be alerted.
From here, you will notice a railway coach straight up ahead. Sprint and jump twice to make your way inside it. On your left, will be your very first firearm – a Pistol, with some cartridges kept helpfully nearby.
Apart from being useful to take enemies from afar, the Pistol will also destroy Nephtoglobin Weak Spots, and help you access previously inaccessible areas. This will be required for the next area as you progress the main quest – this time with your Pistol equipped.
