In Onimusha Way of the Sword, you can go through the entire game without enjoying the best skills that the game has to offer, and the reason is that these skills are locked behind optional content, and do not compulsorily open up as you progress and complete certain key main quests. Not unlocking these skills in a game with tough and brutal final bosses, can be a big dampener on the overall game experience.
So if you are also wondering when will the next set of skills unlock for you in the skill tree in Onimusha Way of the Sword – then here is exactly how you go about doing this in the game.
How To Unlock Nodes In Skill Tree in Onimusha Way of the Sword
You make nodes visible in the skill tree by closing Oni Portals that appear on your map; and then using Red Souls, Power Stones & Oni Stones to unlock them. There are a total of 3 such Oni Portals. The game has you completing the first unlock as part of the main story, so that is guaranteed. However, the second and the third portals are optional, and are easy to forget completing those on the map, especially if you are focused on completing the main story.
Oni Portal #1
The first portal automatically gets completed during the ‘A Strength In Refuge’ quest, and is unmissable. Let me run you through the other 2 Oni Portals in Onimusha – Way of the Sword.
Oni Portal #2

Start from the Kamo Rive East Spirit Mirror, and the Oni Portal is located as marked in the image above. However, do note, you would have needed to unlock the ability to run across walls and other surfaces – this happens after the main quest The Roots Of All Evil. So, if you are looking at accessing the portal before that – wait.
Once this skill has unlocked, follow this path:
- Go to the left of the Kamo River East Spirit Mirror
- Here, you will see a connecting platform that you can run across
- Keep going right, to the very end
- You will come across a space that you can crawl through
- Come out of the other side, and take the ladder on your left
- Cross across the rooftops, then drop down and go through the open gate in front
- Take a right, and you will come across a set of statues with a ladder leading down
- Take that to come across the Oni Portal #2.
How To Complete Oni Portal #2
Oni Portal #2 is mostly linear, with a couple of places to get the blocks moved by shooting an arrow at the red circle. Follow these steps to complete Oni Portal #2:
- Shoot the red orb to move the block up
- Take a left, and you will see a block down, shoot the red orb
- Go back, and you can now use the block to jump over to the other side, and access the cut scene.
Oni Portal #3 Location

Oni Portal #3 is located to the east of the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror, and requires you to shoot down one red mass of threads to open up the entrance. Take the crawl space on the left, then the ladder, and once you come down, you will see the first part that needs to be destroyed on your left. With that out of the way,
- enter the now open temple, take a right, and the ladder through the open gate.
- Take down the enemies, and go straight ahead to a crawl space.
- On the other side, jump across the open portion, to finally arrive at the ladder that leads down to the Oni Portal.
How To Complete Oni Portal #3
This Oni Portal route is a bit tricky, as it requires you to line up a shot at one easy to miss place. Here is how you go about doing exactly that. When you enter, use your gauntlet to conjure up the structure ahead. Climb across the walls using your Oni Agility. As soon as you land, turn back and walk to the edge. You will see a block up ahead with one glowing red orb. Shoot it to move that block in the right place.

Now, move ahead, and before the next wall running section, there will be another block. Shoot it and you can now complete the second wall running section, and land on to the path straight ahead to trigger the cutscene and complete this section. With this completed, you should now have the entire skill tree at your disposal to pick and choose the best skills to unlock, using your Oni Stones, Power Stones and Red Souls. Of course, if you are planning for a Carnage Mode run in Onimusha Way of the Sword, then I would recommend to get everything unlocked.
