Meccha Chameleon: 10 Best Camouflage & Painting Tips

Meccha Chameleon is currently taking the gaming community by storm, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t already on the colorful bandwagon myself. It’s perhaps the most fun I’ve had playing a PC multiplayer this year, and it’s even better with friends. There’s no surprise why this game sold 7 million copies in under two weeks, since everyone’s diving in to see what the fuss is all about.

For beginners, this isn’t your typical prop hunt game, where you disguise yourself as a prop and hope the other players don’t weed out your location.

The idea goes far beyond it, and honestly, there’s a lot of artistry and creativity involved in Meccha Chameleon. That’s not to say that you need to be a good artist or a painter to master this game’s camouflage and painting mechanic, but it will give you an edge over the Seeker’s looking for you. For the Hiders seeking to up their hiding game, this guide is for you.

Here’s what you need to know about Meccha Chameleon’s camouflage and painting mechanic that will give you the upper hand over the Seeker’s colorful Shotgun Shells.

    1. Choose Your Hiding Spot First

The preparation phase is where you need to get your painting jets on Meccha Chameleon. Do not waste this phase, as it will cost you. During this, I’d suggest looking for the perfect hiding spot. Sure, it may take a few tries, but you need to be quick about it. Once you’ve found your spot, you can build the disguise around that exact area. Sample the real colors, shadows, and textures using the Eyedropper Tool you’ll be standing or posing up against.

Any spot is worth hiding in if you can paint and position yourself well. Let me give you an example. The Penguin Hotel map has tons of locations to hide in, but the spot I picked was right beside a knight’s armor. I painted myself dark with absolutely no textures and hid beside the knight’s leg. It’s definitely a pretty simple spot and doesn’t need much painting or posing work done to become invisible. Sample the exact grey color from the knight’s knee area, and hide beside it in complete darkness. I assure you, only the keen-eyed Seekers will find you, and we don’t get a lot of those.

There are no set rules for what a good hiding spot should have. As long as you can sample the colors and textures using the Eyedropper Tool and position yourself well, you can make almost any spot work in Meccha Chameleon. I always recommend going for a busier environment than empty walls, because they’re virtually noisy and the Seekers will spend more time searching for you, which will cost them the match.

    2. Eyedropper Tool is Your Best Friend

I cannot stress this enough: the Eyedropper Tool is a lifesaver in Meccha Chameleon. If you’re an artist, you already know of its usefulness. Still, if you’re not, the Eyedropper Tool can sample the exact colors from the background of your hiding spot. You don’t need to eyeball or guess the colors, thanks to this function. On second thought: always take multiple samples from the same area to copy the shadow and lighting colors accurately.

There’s hardly a location with a flat color in Meccha Chameleon, and if there is, you’ll be spotted almost instantly. Most hiding spots have specific textures, which is where the Eyedropper Tool comes in handy. It’s why I recommend taking multiple samples from the same area, specifically to match the lighting, shadow and the texture of your environment. Don’t select one base color and pray to the Meccha Chameleon gods that the Seeker’s Shotgun doesn’t come in your line of sight.

With the Eyedropper Tool, you can easily create a disguise that matches how the room actually looks rather than appearing as a flat block of paint. The paint system in Meccha Chameleon is specifically designed around environmental sampling rather than manual color guessing, so never take the Eyedropper Tool for granted. It has been my best friend for the past week, and it will work its charm for you. Do not try to eyeball your colors, or they will end up splattered on a painting, thanks to a Seeker.

    3. Start With Broad Colors

    Image via leomorion_1224

The rule of thumb for any painting is to start with broad colors, then apply shadows and textures on different layers. With this, you get the overall picture of what the final art will look like. With Meccha Chameleon, it’s no different. Every hiding-spot background features a broad color, and then you have the textures, shadows and the lighting. Don’t start with the secondary details first. After you find your forever home, use the Eyedropper Tool to pick the broad color.

Here’s what I do: I start with a large base color to cover my entire body. Once my overall color matches the environment, then add shadows, patterns, and finer details if time allows. If you’re quick, you can easily create a masterful disguise with all the textures and patterns. This won’t come to you in a single match, unless you already have painting experience, but practice makes perfect. In my experience, getting the general color right provides more value than spending thirty seconds painting tiny details nobody will notice from across the room.

I’d advise you to pay attention to the tiny details only if you have enough time left. If there isn’t, pay attention to the base color, shadows and lighting. Your positioning plays a huge role in creating the perfect disguise, and I’ll discuss it next. Textures and patterns become important in the concluding stages of the preparation phase in Meccha Chameleon.

    4. Positioning & Silhouette Are Equally Important

You might think that sampling colors accurately is the most important hiding factor besides location in Meccha Chameleon, but let me tell you, the game’s mechanics go deeper than that. Positioning and your silhouette matter more than colors. Picking the relevant color is easy thanks to the Eyedropper Tool, but there’s no handbook telling you what position works at which location in the game. Seekers are more prone to notice shapes than to notice tiny color mistakes.

To learn how Seekers think and search rooms, our Meccha Chameleon beginner’s guide breaks it down in detail. You can have a nearly perfect color match and still get caught immediately because your silhouette sticks out.

So, before worrying about color accuracy, figure out your posing and silhouette after you pick a hiding spot, then start coloring your white character. When choosing a pose, flatten yourself against surfaces, hide limb outlines and avoid standing upright whenever possible. You aim to look like an environmental prop rather than a model blending in. This is where the prop-hunt aspect of the game comes into play.

I’d also recommend figuring out how to use corners like a pro. They’re some of the strongest hiding locations, but also one of the most underutilized ones. These corners offer natural shadows, multiple matching surfaces and a better silhouette disruption that keeps you invisible from a Seeker’s keen eye in Meccha Chameleon.

If you’re pressed against a corner, you become much harder to identify than someone standing against a flat wall. Now, I’m not saying you should always pick a corner, as the Seekers will quickly pick up on your trail if you repeat hiding spots. But once in a while, you can lend your artistic skills to a bare corner. Avoid sticking out like a sore thumb that the Seekers would like nothing better than to cut off.

    5. Use Walls, Frames, and Furniture to Hide Your Outline

Meccha Chameleon’s best hiding spots usually have hard edges already built into the environment. Picture frames, shelves, cabinets, pillars, and wall decorations naturally create visual lines that can disguise parts of your body. Wall frames are particularly helpful because their rectangular shapes can conceal your outline when positioned correctly. Even from multiple angles, you won’t be noticeable unless the Seeker is trying really hard.

Prop clusters, balloons, decorations, wall art and other props should also catch your attention. Areas with the most visual noise are harder to figure out, which is why most players go for these locations. As a beginner to Meccha Chameleon, I’d recommend hiding yourself around these clusters. However, if you like a challenge, then consider hiding in an open space, right under the Seeker’s nose. Hide where they least expect it.

Certain rounds will have you hide yourself in open spaces, especially the Backrooms map, whose visually noisy areas are pretty distinct. This might be hard to pull off as a beginner, but for a seasoned artist, that’s light work. So, when you’re done searching the clustered areas, move on to the open spaces if you can’t find the last Hider alive.

    6. Utilize Shadows

Camouflage doesn’t always mean that you need to paint the perfect disguise to win Meccha Chameleon. The game provides plenty of dark areas to make your paint job a tad bit easier. If you don’t consider yourself a good painter, I’d recommend searching for darker areas. Of course, this comes with its own set of disadvantages, as these areas are Seeker hotspots.

Seekers won’t be ogling around open spaces because they know that only a few players have the skills to hide right under their noses. The first thing they check is the darker areas, because these are the spots where you can hide with little to no effort. They generally have a single flat color with no textures, so the Eyedropper Tool becomes more useful. These areas are also filled with shadows, which will cloud the Seeker’s vision from unloading their Shotgun on you.

Small painting mistakes also become much harder to notice. A slight color mismatch that would stand out in direct light often disappears once it’s hidden in a darker corner. If you’re struggling with painting accuracy, I think choosing a shadowed area can dramatically improve your odds, especially if you’re a beginner to the chaos of Meccha Chameleon.

    7. Don’t Rely on Viral Hiding Spots

    Image via leomorion_1224

As Meccha Chameleon exploded in popularity, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and community forums quickly filled with “overpowered” hiding spots. I’d say steer clear of these locations for now, since experienced Seekers check many of them first. They don’t stay overpowered if millions of people watch the clip and become aware of it. Even if you choose to hide there, you still need to create an impressive disguise to bypass the bloodthirsty eyes of the Seekers.

For example, the Hide-and-Seek Mansion has a ton of paintings on the wall. Now, these viral clips have players trying to become a part of the painting’s background or the frame. I do think that these are really good hiding spots, but they’re oversaturated right now due to their repeated exposure on social media. So, for now, any hiding spot that’s viral on social platforms should be off-limits, unless you’re a master painter.

    8. Start With the Basic Game Mode

Meccha Chameleon has three different game modes: Infection, Double and Basic. Besides choosing a game mode that fits your group, you should also choose the one that helps you master your painting and camouflaging skills, and that’s Basic. I’ll list and explain what each game mode is and why Basic is the one you should opt for if you’re a beginner:

    • Basic: The standard Meccha Chameleon game mode. The group is split into two teams: the Hiders and the Seekers. The latter need to find the Hiders before the time runs out. If it does, the Hiders win the game, and vice versa.
    • Infection: One or two Hiders start the game, and when a Seeker finds you, you also become one.
    • Double: In this game mode, everyone hides first, and then everyone hunts, so each player takes a turn on both sides of the round. Whoever finds the most players, or finds everyone first, wins the mode.

Basic is easily the best mode to begin with because the objectives are simple. If you’re a Hider, you paint yourself and hide until the timer runs out.

If you’re a Seeker, you hunt down all the remaining Hiders. So, since I’m discussing Hiders, this game mode is the perfect start to your painting journey in Meccha Chameleon. You can practice as much as you want, and even though chances are you’ll get caught in the first few matches, there’s no better way to learn to master hiding.

    9. Think Like a Seeker

    Image via leomorion_1224

As they say, when you can’t beat them, join them, then beat them. In Meccha Chameleon, to avoid the Seeker, you need to start thinking like one. Most Seekers enter a room and immediately check the most common hiding zones, prop clusters, and wall edges. This doesn’t mean you should avoid these locations entirely. Instead, take it as a challenge to hide here with an even stronger disguise.

Use nearby props to hide your outline. Meccha Chameleon’s rule of thumb is that if you can hide part of your body shape, it’s helping your disguise. Prioritize correct positioning, base color, and pose before moving on to the small decorative touches. Leave the secondary touches until the last few seconds and cover your entire body with a broad matching color to position yourself well.

One last note: always stay still in your disguise. Your heart might start beating when a Seeker gets awfully close to your hiding spot. In such a case, avoid shuffling, rotating or repositioning and believe in your setup. If you move even once, you’re already as good as splattered paint on a wall. You may reposition if your surroundings are clear and your disguise isn’t strong enough. But be careful.

    10. Don’t Play It Like a Painting Game

    Image via leomorion_1224

My last advice is: don’t play Meccha Chameleon like a painting game. Painting and camouflaging yourself is only a part of it. Your positioning, lighting and silhouettes play equally important roles. If you know how a Seeker searches a room, you’re already one step ahead of the camouflaged curve. So, I’d advise you to treat it more like a prop hunt title. Disguise yourself as one, and you might be golden, literally.

You don’t need to be Van Gogh to create your own masterpiece in Meccha Chameleon. As someone with years of experience in painting, the game encourages you to pay attention to the little details that can make or break your disguise, which starts from the colors itself and ends with the positioning. Do not be afraid to reposition in the preparation phase if you feel like your hiding spot is too overexposed.

With these painting and camouflaging tips and tricks, I hope you become one of the best Hiders in Meccha Chameleon and fool Seekers for years to come.

    What is Meccha Chameleon?

Meccha Chameleon is a multiplayer hide-and-seek game where Hiders paint their white bodies to blend into the environment while Seekers try to find them before time runs out.

How do you hide in Meccha Chameleon?

Hiders use paint, poses, and positioning to mimic the stage and make themselves look like part of the environment.

How do Seekers win in Meccha Chameleon?

The Seeker team wins by finding every Hider before the round timer expires.

Do you need to be good at drawing to play Meccha Chameleon?

Not necessarily. Basic color matching and smart positioning can be effective even if you’re not particularly artistic.

What makes a good hiding spot in Meccha Chameleon?

A strong hiding spot combines matching colors, a convincing pose, and a location that helps disguise your body shape.

Is Meccha Chameleon a prop hunt game?

No, I wouldn’t call it a prop hunt game. While it shares the hide-and-seek concept, players camouflage themselves through painting and posing rather than transforming into map objects.

What platforms is Meccha Chameleon available on?

For now, Meccha Chameleon is available to purchase for Windows PC via Steam.
