    For more than a decade, GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County have been the benchmark for open-world scale in the Grand Theft Auto series. However, GTA 6 already looks ready to push that standard further with the fictional state of Leonida.

    Rockstar has not revealed Leonida’s exact map size yet, so any direct square-mile comparison is still speculation. What we do know is that GTA 6 goes beyond Vice City’s skyscrapers and beaches. Rockstar has already confirmed multiple major regions, including Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga.

    That alone suggests GTA 6 will offer more environmental variety than GTA 5, moving between dense city streets, coastal areas, wetlands, industrial regions, small towns, highways, and wilderness zones.

    Leonida is the fictional state where GTA 6 takes place. It is Rockstar’s modern take on a Florida-inspired setting, with Vice City sitting at the center of the experience.

    Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page describes the story as stretching across the state of Leonida, with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos caught in a criminal conspiracy after an “easy score” goes wrong. That wording alone makes it clear that GTA 6 is not limited to one city.

    The confirmed Leonida locations include:

    • Vice City
    • Leonida Keys
    • Grassrivers
    • Port Gellhorn
    • Ambrosia
    • Mount Kalaga

    Each region appears to offer a different atmosphere. Vice City brings the neon-lit urban energy, Leonida Keys focuses on coastal island life, Grassrivers gives us swamp and wetland environments, Port Gellhorn looks like a rougher coastal destination, Ambrosia appears more industrial, and Mount Kalaga adds a northern wilderness region.

    This makes Leonida feel more like a full state than a single city map. Instead of only rebuilding Vice City, Rockstar seems to be designing a broader world with multiple cultures, environments, and travel routes.

    GTA 6 Map Compared to GTA 5

    The biggest question is obvious: how big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?

    The honest answer is that Rockstar has not confirmed the exact size of Leonida yet. So, any claim that the GTA 6 map is 30%, 50%, or two times larger than GTA 5 should be treated as speculation.

    However, based on Rockstar’s official location reveals, GTA 6 already looks more varied in layout than GTA 5.

    GTA 5’s map was built around:

    • Blaine County
    • Sandy Shores
    • Grapeseed
    • Paleto Bay

GTA 6 has the opportunity to improve on that by making each region feel more interactive and meaningful.

    The real comparison will not only come down to map size. What matters more is density, interiors, activities, traversal, NPC behavior, wildlife, missions, and how often players have reasons to visit each region.

    A smaller but denser map can sometimes feel better than a huge empty one. From what Rockstar has shown so far, Leonida looks like it is aiming for both scale and density.

    Vice City was one of the most memorable parts of GTA: Vice City, and in GTA 6, it returns as a modern, larger, and more detailed version of Rockstar’s Miami-inspired city.

    This is not the same 1980s Vice City we remember from the 2002 game. Rockstar’s official description makes it clear that the eighties are far behind. GTA 6’s Vice City is shaped by modern nightlife, social media, tourism, crime, music, luxury, and street culture.

    Compared to GTA 5’s Los Santos, Vice City already looks denser in the trailers. We have seen crowded beaches, neon streets, packed nightclubs, traffic-heavy roads, luxury cars, marinas, and busy pedestrian areas.

    The beach shots from the GTA 6 trailers are especially important. They show Rockstar pushing crowd density much further than GTA 5, with NPCs relaxing, walking, filming, working out, and interacting with the environment.

    Vice City will likely be the main urban hub of GTA 6, but it is only one part of Leonida. That is what makes the map exciting. Players will not just explore a rebuilt Vice City; they will also travel beyond it into wetlands, coastal towns, rural roads, industrial areas, and wilderness regions.

    Grassrivers Could Be GTA 6’s Biggest Surprise

    Urban areas usually get the most attention in GTA games, but Grassrivers could become one of GTA 6’s most interesting regions.

    Grassrivers appears to be Rockstar’s take on Florida’s Everglades, filled with wetlands, waterways, airboats, wildlife, and swampy terrain. Rockstar describes the region as a place where gators are only the most famous attraction, which suggests there may be more danger below the surface.

    Compared to GTA 5’s wilderness areas, Grassrivers already looks more active and atmospheric. The trailers show airboats, marshes, wildlife, and swamp routes that could support missions, exploration, random encounters, and environmental storytelling.

    If Rockstar uses Grassrivers well, it could avoid the problem many players had with GTA 5’s empty-feeling countryside. Instead of being a scenic backdrop, the swamp could become a proper gameplay region with its own identity.

    Mount Kalaga and the Northern Wilderness

    Mount Kalaga is another confirmed Leonida region that could add major variety to the GTA 6 map.

    Rockstar describes Mount Kalaga as a national landmark on the state’s northern border, surrounded by backwoods, rivers, and outdoor recreation. This makes it sound like GTA 6’s answer to GTA 5’s Mount Chiliad, but potentially with more surrounding activity and regional identity.

    Mount Chiliad became famous because of its size, mystery, and community theories. Mount Kalaga could play a similar role if Rockstar hides secrets, side activities, wildlife encounters, or strange events in the area.

    The northern wilderness also helps Leonida feel less like a flat Florida parody and more like a full Rockstar open world with different terrain types.

    Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia Add More Variety

    Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia are two of the most interesting confirmed regions outside Vice City.

    Port Gellhorn appears to be a coastal location that has seen better days. Rockstar describes it as a place with cheap motels, closed attractions, and a rougher atmosphere. That gives it a very different mood from Vice City’s luxury and neon nightlife.

    The GTA community has been analyzing every frame of GTA 6’s trailers since the first reveal in December 2023. Rockstar has not shown the full map yet, but the trailers include several clues about how Leonida may be structured.

    Fans have noticed:

    • Highway signs
    • Airport references
    • Road networks
    • License plates
    • Bridges
    • Wetland routes
    • Coastal roads
    • Rural towns
    • Beachfront districts
    • Industrial zones

    Some signs and references point toward areas like Downtown, Vice Beaches, Port VC, Leonida Keys, and VCI Airport. The airport clue is especially important because a major international airport would make sense for Vice City, much like Los Santos International Airport in GTA 5.

    Trailer 2 also gives a better look at areas beyond Vice City, including coastal settlements, highways, and swamp regions. These details support the idea that GTA 6 will encourage players to move across the state instead of staying in one city.

    However, until Rockstar reveals the full in-game map, all fan-made map layouts should be treated as estimates.

    Will GTA 6 Have Multiple Cities?

    Vice City is the only major city Rockstar has clearly positioned as the central hub of GTA 6. However, Leonida also includes several named regions that could function as major destinations.

    Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia are the strongest examples. They may not be Vice City-sized metropolises, but they appear more substantial than simple countryside settlements.

    This is where GTA 6 could differ from GTA 5. GTA 5 had Los Santos as the main city, with smaller towns and rural areas around it. GTA 6 may follow a similar structure, but with more distinct regions spread across the state.

    It is not confirmed that GTA 6 will have multiple large cities like GTA: San Andreas had with Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas. So, the safest wording is this:

    One of the biggest fan wishes for GTA 6 is more enterable buildings.

    GTA 5 had some memorable interiors, including stores, Ammu-Nation locations, safehouses, mission interiors, and Online properties. However, many players felt Los Santos had too many buildings that looked interesting from the outside but could not be entered.

    GTA 6 could improve this significantly. The trailers and screenshots show convenience stores, bars, motels, pawn shops, restaurants, nightclubs, and other detailed spaces. Jason and Lucia are also seen robbing stores, which suggests interiors will play an important role in missions.

    How Rockstar Is Upping Open-World Realism

    The biggest improvement is density. Streets, beaches, clubs, roads, and public spaces look packed with people and activity. NPCs appear to be filming, dancing, walking, reacting, exercising, and participating in the world rather than simply standing around.

    The visual detail is also a major leap. Trailer 2 was captured in-game from a PlayStation 5 and includes both gameplay and cutscenes, which makes the lighting, reflections, traffic, water, and crowd scenes even more impressive.

    Other improvements appear to include:

    • More natural wildlife
    • Improved water visuals
    • Better lighting and reflections
    • More varied environments
    • More believable nightlife
    • Stronger social media presence inside the world

    Rockstar has not fully explained systems like police AI, weather, NPC routines, or world simulation yet. Still, based on what has been shown, Leonida already looks like Rockstar’s most detailed open world so far.

    GTA 6 Map Wishlist

    Even though Rockstar has already revealed several locations, fans still have a long wishlist for the GTA 6 map.

    More Enterable Interiors

    This is probably the biggest request. Players want more stores, homes, malls, hotels, restaurants, bars, apartments, offices, and random buildings to explore.

    If GTA 6 includes more enterable interiors than GTA 5, Leonida will feel much more alive and interactive.

    Better Use of Rural Areas

    GTA 5’s countryside had memorable locations, but many areas felt underused. With Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Ambrosia, and Leonida Keys, GTA 6 has a chance to make rural and wilderness regions more important.

    Players want reasons to explore outside Vice City, such as:

    • Random events
    • Wildlife encounters

    • Boat activities
    • Hunting or fishing-style systems
    • Secrets and mysteries

    More Map Secrets

    GTA players love mysteries. From Mount Chiliad theories to ghost sightings and strange Easter eggs, Rockstar maps are always more fun when they hide secrets.

    Leonida’s swamps, islands, forests, backroads, abandoned buildings, and coastal areas are perfect for mysteries. Fans are already expecting strange encounters, hidden references, and weird Rockstar-style surprises.

    Stronger Online Expansion Potential

    Rockstar has not fully detailed GTA 6 Online yet, but players naturally expect GTA 6’s online world to grow over time, just like GTA Online did.
