Can You Transfer Demo Save Files to Full Game in Digimon Story Time Stranger?

By Jorge AguilarOctober 3, 20255 Mins Read

If you played the Digimon Story: Time Stranger demo, you likely want to know how to get your progress. It is not as simple as it sounds, unfortunately. You need to have played it on a specific console, and there’s more to it. However, if you have it down right, you’ll get your save before you know it.

Are You Able to Transfer the Demo Save File to the Full Game in Digimon Story: Time Stranger?

You can transfer your Digimon Story: Time Stranger demo save file to the full game, but only if you played on Steam. No one wants to pour time into a demo only to have to start all over again. The process is usually pretty straightforward: the full game will often give you an automatic prompt to transfer the data right when you launch it.

Just select “Yes” and confirm it from the main menu, then hit “Continue” to pick up exactly where you left off. Just a quick heads-up, though: this transfer only works with your manual saved data from the demo; the auto-saves won’t carry over so you may need to redo some Digivolving.

Also, if you already have existing save files in the full game, bringing over your demo data will overwrite them, so make sure you’re cool with that before you hit transfer. If you are on consoles and it doesn’t show, there’s nothing you can do.

If the automatic transfer doesn’t pop up, or if you get a scary-sounding “corrupted” save error, don’t panic! You’ve got a couple of manual solutions you can try. One simple fix is to launch the demo again and just change one of the settings (like the graphics or sound) and then save those new settings. After that, try launching the full game and attempting the transfer again. Another, more technical approach is to manually copy and paste the saved data files.

You’ll need to navigate to your Steam installation folder, find the “savedata” folder inside the “gamedata” directory for both the demo and the full game, and then copy the files from the demo’s “savedata” folder into the full game’s equivalent folder. If you’re a Steam user, there are even specific paths within “userdata” tied to your Steam ID for this manual transfer.

What Is an Alternative Way to Transfer Data in Digimon Story: Time Stranger?

So, if the automatic save transfer for Digimon Story: Time Stranger isn’t working for you (maybe you’ve run into a corrupted save or something) there’s a way to manually move your files. It’s a bit of a copy-and-paste job, and it means digging around in your Steam installation directory. This could be a video games where you can relive your summer memories just through nostaliga.

For the main game, your save files are usually hanging out in Digimon Story Time Stranger\gamedata\savedata. If you’re looking for the demo saves, you’ll find those in Digimon Story Time Stranger Demo\gamedata\savedata.

To do this manual transfer, first, you need to locate that demo save folder. The easiest way is to open Steam, right-click on “Digimon Story Time Stranger Demo,” go to “Manage,” and then hit “Browse local files.” Once you’re in the game’s folder, just navigate to gamedata\savedata and copy all the files in there.

Next up, you have to find the matching savedata folder for the full game. Do the same routine: open Steam, right-click on “Digimon Story Time Stranger,” go to “Manage,” and select “Browse local files,” and then head into gamedata\savedata. Now, paste those files you copied from the demo right into this folder. A word of warning: this only works for the saves you made manually—the autosave data from the demo can’t be moved this way. Also, if you already have save files in the full game’s folder that you don’t mind losing, you might need to delete them before pasting to keep things clean.

If that first method doesn’t work, there’s another related place your saves might be. You can try looking in Steam’s main data structure: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[YOUR STEAM ID]\1984270 for the full game and C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[YOUR STEAM ID]\3815860 for the demo. Copying everything from the demo’s numeric folder (3815860) and pasting it into the main game’s numeric folder (1984270) might also sort the issue out.

After you’ve done the transfer, you might need to restart the game or even your whole system for the game to properly detect and load the files. If you deleted your demo before getting the full game, you might have to search your Steam Cloud for those demo manual save files and then copy and paste them. It’s probably a good idea to launch the full game first to make sure all the necessary folders are generated before you try pasting anything in Digimon Story: Time Stranger.
