How to Digivolve in Digimon Story Time Stranger

How to Digivolve in Digimon Story Time Stranger

If you’re jumping into Digimon Story: Time Stranger, you’ll figure out pretty fast that Digivolving your team is a strategic thing you do outside of battles. That’s genuinely useful, since it lets you plan out your perfect crew rather than evolving on autopilot.

Digimon takes a different approach to evolution than other franchises, so this isn’t quite what you’d expect coming in cold. It’s worth focusing in on what Digivolving actually requires before you start throwing stat boosts at random.

    How to Digivolve Your Digimon

For most Digivolutions, you need two basic things: hitting a specific Agent Rank and meeting certain stat requirements. Your Agent Rank mostly rises as you play through the main story, but side quests give you a nice boost too, through Anomaly Points. This is why the really powerful Digimon unlock as you get further into your adventure rather than all at once. As a general benchmark, Champion-level Digivolutions tend to need Agent Rank 3, while Ultimate-level forms often require Rank 5 or higher.

A huge part of making your Digimon grow is the Personality system. There are 16 different Digimon Personalities in the game, and each one directly affects which stats get boosted as your Digimon levels up. For instance, a “Daring” personality helps out with ATK and DEF growth, while a “Zealous” personality pushes ATK and SPD instead. So if you’re aiming for a specific Digivolution, you need to grow the right personality to match its stat requirements.

Outside of just naturally leveling up, the DigiFarm is your go-to for controlling stats and personalities directly. You can use Training Sets there to bump up specific stats and, more importantly, shift a Digimon’s personality toward one of four core values: Affection, Heart, Understanding, or Companionship. Say you use a Punching Bag A Training Set. That will increase ATK and move the personality toward Heart and Affection.

Keep in mind that these training sessions take real-world time, usually somewhere between 15 and 90 minutes depending on the training type and any Agent Skills you’ve unlocked, though you can pay a little in-game currency to complete them instantly. The downside is that any Digimon on the DigiFarm for training is temporarily unavailable for your active or reserve party. Having conversations with your Digimon outside of battle can also give you dialogue options that subtly nudge their personality in a certain direction, adding another layer to how you influence them.

You can also De-Digivolve, and the requirements are a lot less intense. You mainly need to have encountered the target Digimon before, and your current Digimon’s personality needs to match the base personality of the one you want to revert to. This flexibility is genuinely useful, and combining it with the Load Enhancement feature, which lets you raise talent and stats without having to de-digivolve at all, streamlines the whole process of building and perfecting your ultimate Digimon team.

How to De-Digivolve in Digimon Story: Time Stranger

De-Digivolution is a pretty vital mechanic if you want to really nail your Digimon’s growth and unlock new evolution paths. Unlike regular Digivolution, which is all about hitting certain stat milestones and Agent Ranks, De-Digivolution runs on its own set of rules. The main thing you need to worry about is having already encountered that specific Digimon in its prior form.

So if you’re trying to revert a Champion-level Greymon back to a Rookie-level Agumon, you need to have had Agumon in your collection at some point. That makes sense; the game isn’t going to expect you to revert into a form you’ve never even laid eyes on.

Beyond just encountering the Digimon, your current Digimon’s personality is a massive factor in the De-Digivolution process. The game is specific about this, requiring that the personality of the Digimon you’re trying to change match the base personality of the target you’re De-Digivolving to. In practice, that means if you want your Greymon to revert to Agumon, Greymon’s current personality has to match Agumon’s natural, or “base,” personality.

The 16 Personalities in the game fall under four core types: Valor, Philanthropy, Wisdom, and Amicability. These are all influenced by the same four core values mentioned above: Affection, Heart, Understanding, and Companionship. You can shift your Digimon’s personality using dialogue options outside of battle, but the more reliable method is through the DigiFarm’s training sets. Each training set boosts specific stats while also nudging your Digimon’s personality toward a particular core value.

The actual De-Digivolving process isn’t as demanding on raw numerical stats compared to Digivolving, but the personality requirement makes sure you’re actively managing and understanding your Digimon’s traits rather than just cycling through forms without thought.

It’s the game’s way of pushing you toward deeper engagement with the personality system, since a correctly matched personality is the key to making it work. Time Stranger doesn’t spell out an exact in-game menu prompt for De-Digivolution, but based on how it behaves, you can do it any time outside of battle, just like regular Digivolution.

The main perk of De-Digivolving is the ability to re-spec a Digimon, which can unlock different evolution paths or redistribute cumulative stats and talent. It’s also worth knowing that Load Enhancement can raise talent and stats without De-Digivolving at all, which is a nice touch that addresses a common complaint from earlier titles in the series.

What do you need to Digivolve a Digimon in Time Stranger?

You need to hit the Agent Rank required for that specific Digivolution and meet its stat thresholds. Agent Rank rises through main story progress and side quest Anomaly Points, while stats grow through leveling, DigiFarm training, and matching the right Personality to your target evolution.

How many Personalities are there in Digimon Story: Time Stranger?

There are 16 individual Personalities, grouped under four core types: Valor, Philanthropy, Wisdom, and Amicability. Each one shifts which stats grow fastest as your Digimon levels up.

Can you De-Digivolve any Digimon at any time?

Only if you’ve previously encountered the target lower form and your Digimon’s current Personality matches that form’s base Personality. Outside of those two requirements, you can De-Digivolve any time outside of battle.

Does training on the DigiFarm take real time?

Yes, generally somewhere between 15 and 90 minutes depending on the training type and your unlocked Agent Skills, though you can pay in-game currency to finish instantly. Any Digimon in training is unavailable for your party until it’s done.
