As you begin Chapter 3 in Valor Mortis and progress ahead from the first Lantern after speaking to Lucjan, you will soon come to the trigger for the first side quest here. This one does not take too long, and has a nice, short bittersweet story around which it is built. It also helps that you get an Amber to further tweak your build on completing this side quest. The path for the side quest runs parallel to the main story progression as well.
In this gude, I have put up all the details on how to start and complete The Scarecrow side quest in Valor Mortis; and the rewards that you get for doing so.
Starting The Scarecrow Quest
You will come across The Scarecrow a short distance from the first Lantern in Chapter 3, just before the barn that progresses the main quest. You will see a blue Echo around it, and once it is done, an Interact button will show up. On doing so, The Scarecrow side quest gets unlocked and added to your log.
It looks like it is looking for a couple of items – a Pendant; and a Letter to finally find peace, and thankfully, one of the two items is quite nearby
Item 1 – Pendant
On the right of The Scarecrow, in the fields, you will spot a barren tree. Go search around it’s vicinity to find a corpse, and The Lover’s Pendant next to it.
Item 2 – Letter
The second item is also located nearby – but it will need you to first open up the blocked path on the other side of the Lantern. Once that is done, the Letter is actually in the building on your left, right next to where you get the Ferrofluid Power Upgrade, but the door is locked.
Again, this requires you to go straight, and then take a left to enter the building. While there is a detailed step by step walkthrough that we have covered as part of Chapter 3: Rendezvous, the short summary here is:
- Proceed straight ahead through the fields, and be aware of the dead cattle with blisters that acts almost as a mine, the Shambling Civilians enemies armed with rakes and scythes, and ones that alert everyone to your presence.
- As you go through the first and the second fence, you will come across a branching path.
- The left is strewn with dead cattle with the orange blisters and winds upwards. Take that path to lead into the house.
- You can now unbolt the main entrance, and go to the first floor to get the Letter.
Once you do that, you will find the Letter on the first floor of the building.
Returning back to the Scarecrow
Return both the items to the Scarecrow, and the quest will update that he is finally at peace, with the crows then heading away … in a particular direction, if you happen to observe. Funnily, here, you will not get an update on the quest closure, and no rewards pop up.
Open the quest log, and you will see the reason why – the last part of the quest is still not done, you have to follow the crows to see where they go, and then reach there.
The Scarecrow – Where do the crows lead to
The crows lead to a barn, which remains inaccessible until you shoot a cart that conveniently creates a platform for you to reach the first floor. Enter there, and you will see a blue Echo. Wait for it to get over, and interact with the pillow to complete the quest.
The Scarecrow – Rewards
On completing the quest, you will receive a Bountiful Harvest Amber, and 6500 Catalyst. When equipped, the Bountiful Harvest Amber restores Health on picking up Nephtoglobin Remnants.
