How to Upgrade Your Backpack in Tales of the Shire

By Jorge AguilarAugust 11, 20254 Mins Read

In Tales of the Shire, a bigger backpack means a happier, more productive hobbit. As you explore Bywater, you’ll find tons of stuff to forage, but your initial backpack space fills up super fast.

Having to constantly run back to your hobbit hole to empty your inventory can really slow you down, especially when you’re trying to gather ingredients for cooking and other activities. The good news is, you can totally get a bigger backpack by getting involved with the community and finishing some specific tasks.

The secret to expanding your inventory in Tales of the Shire is the Foraging Club. But before you can get help from Delphinium Brandybuck, you need to unlock the different clubs in Bywater. This all happens as part of the “Becoming a Village” storyline. It’s a series of quests designed to get everyone in the village working together.

You have to convince Old Noakes to start the Fishing Club, talk Lily Cotton into heading up the Cooking Club, and get Farmer Cotton to let Rosie Cotton run the Gardening Club. And, of course, you’ll need to persuade Delphinium that people actually want a Foraging Club and finish Young Tom’s Trouble. Once all the clubs have enough support and you have the friends needed, you’ll uncover the old Club Boards near the Ivy Bush Inn, and that’s when the club activities officially begin.

Once the clubs are all set up, you should focus on the Foraging Club. Leveling this club up is what gets you those backpack expansions. You can gain Foraging Club XP in two main ways. The first is just by foraging, like gathering mushrooms, herbs, and nuts around the Shire. But a much faster way is to complete the tasks posted on the Club Boards.

These tasks usually require you to collect a certain amount of specific items, and they give you a big boost to your club XP. Doing these will help you reach level 2 a lot quicker. As soon as you hit level 2 in the Foraging Club, go find Delphinium Brandybuck.

As a reward for your hard work, she’ll give you a backpack expansion, which means more inventory slots! This lets you carry more stuff when you’re out exploring and makes gathering ingredients so much smoother. As you continue to level up the Foraging Club, you’ll unlock even more backpack expansions. A bigger backpack means more time adventuring and less time running home, so focusing on the Foraging Club is a great idea.

Do You Need a Bigger Backpack?

Tales of the Shire lets you live a simple hobbit life, but if you want to get serious about it, you’re going to need a bigger backpack. The Shire is full of amazing natural resources like mushrooms, berries, and herbs. You need these for cooking and helping out the community of Bywater. But your hobbit starts with a tiny backpack, and that quickly becomes a problem.

The starter backpack might be okay for a little trip, but it’s a huge pain when you’re really trying to get stuff done. The Shire is packed with things to collect, and you’re going to want to grab everything you see. But with only ten inventory slots, you’ll be constantly running back to your hobbit hole to drop things off.

All that running around breaks up your flow, keeps you from getting all the good ingredients, and really slows down your progress. A bigger backpack fixes this, letting you stay out longer, collect more in one trip, and be way more efficient. It’s not just about convenience, either. A bigger backpack actually lets you get more out of the game. A lot of recipes need a bunch of different ingredients, and being able to carry a wide variety lets you really get into hobbit cooking and try new things.

Also, a bigger inventory makes it way easier to do quests and fill requests from the town, so you can do a better job helping out Bywater. The more you can carry, the more you can contribute, which strengthens your relationships with the townsfolk and makes you a more important part of the community in Tales of the Shire.
