How to Equip and Refill Your Watering Can in Tales of the Shire

By Jorge AguilarAugust 27, 20256 Mins Read

For all the folks jumping into the peaceful world of Tales of the Shire, you’re probably eager to get your hands dirty with some gardening. To do that, you’re going to need a trusty watering can.

You don’t get many instructions for the watering can in Tales of the Shire, so it can be confusing. Luckily, using the watering can is easy once you get the hang of it.

To bring up the tool wheel and finally get to watering your crops, the method depends on your preferred input in Tales of the Shire. If you’re on a keyboard, a quick press of the T key will do the trick. If you’re a controller user, just hit the Up direction on the D-pad. The second you do, a circular menu will pop up on your screen showing all your available tools.

Once the tool wheel is up, finding the watering can is a breeze. It’s represented by a little icon of a watering can, naturally, and it’s usually on the right side of the wheel. It’s pretty common for players to have the fishing rod equipped since you get introduced to fishing pretty early on. The tool wheel is how you switch between all your items and activities, making it easy to put away your fishing pole and grab your gardening tool. Just select the watering can icon from the wheel, and it will be instantly equipped and ready to use.

Early on, during the “From Small Things” quest, the game asks you to use it for the first time. This is where a lot of people get confused, and honestly, I don’t blame them. You’re probably looking all over your cozy little hobbit hole or out in the garden for a physical watering can you can pick up. But you won’t find it.

The watering can isn’t a traditional tool you just find lying around. It’s integrated into the game’s core systems in a way that’s much more streamlined, but also a bit different from what you might expect.

The reason you can’t just stumble upon your watering can is that it’s not a tangible item you need to hold and equip like in other games. Instead, Tales of the Shire has a handy tool wheel that lets you access all your important gear, from your fishing rod to your watering can, with just a couple of button presses.

With the watering can in hand, you’re all set to water your little patch of earth. It’s simple, too—just aim at your plants and hold down the designated watering button. This will start a nice, steady stream of water to nourish the soil. This will help you get vegetables for your recipes.

In Tales of Shire, you can easily switch between all your tools, including the watering can, by holding down the ‘T’ key on your keyboard. This brings up the tool wheel, a crucial interface that lets you access all your essential items quickly.

When you hold down the ‘T’ key, a circular menu appears on your screen, showing you all the tools you have available. If your character is currently holding a fishing rod, you can simply bring up the tool wheel and select the watering can from the right side of the circle. Once you’ve selected the watering can, it will automatically equip, and you can start watering your crops.

It’s pretty simple to fill up your watering can in Tales of the Shire. You need to find a water source, and luckily, there’s one right outside your front door. The easiest way to get your watering can topped up is by using the small pond that’s right next to your vegetable garden.

Just walk up to the edge of the pond, make sure you have your watering can equipped, and hit the interact button. Just like that, your can will be full and ready to go. The cool part is you aren’t just limited to that little pond by your garden. While it’s definitely the most convenient spot, any body of water you find while exploring Bywater will do the trick.

This is super handy if you’re out on a quest or just wandering around and notice your can is running low. You don’t have to trek all the way back home to get more water; you can just find a nearby stream, lake, or another pond to fill it up. This will give you what you need for plants, which are important for making money.

The easiest and most accessible way to refill your watering can is by using the small pond that’s right next to your vegetable garden. Its close proximity makes it a snap to top off your can whenever your water supply starts to get low. All you have to do is walk up to the edge of the water, make sure you have your watering can equipped with the tool wheel, and hit the interact button. In just a few seconds, your can will be full and ready for you to get back to those thirsty plants.

Beyond the garden, the Shire has plenty of other water sources you can use to refill your watering can. This flexibility means you’re never going to be stuck without a way to give your crops a drink, no matter where your adventures take you. Whether you’re just exploring new areas or out and about, if you see your watering can running low, just keep an eye out for any body of water.

Lakes, streams, and other similar sources all over Bywater are all viable options for refilling. This widespread availability ensures that even when you’re far from home, you can keep up with your gardening tasks in Tales of the Shire.
