BioShock’s Next Chapter Is in Absolute Chaos as Developers Scramble

By Jorge AguilarAugust 1, 20253 Mins Read

The next highly anticipated game in the popular BioShock series is reportedly facing major problems during its development. Recent internal reviews have led to big changes in both the creative direction and leadership of the project. Sources close to the development team at Cloud Chamber, the studio working on the new BioShock game, say that the game recently failed an important review by executives at 2K Games.

This failure has caused a wave of changes, leaving developers struggling and raising fears about possible job cuts. The BioShock series is known for its deep stories, unique art style, and philosophical themes. The three main games in the series have sold more than 43 million copies combined.

Fans have been waiting over ten years for a new main game since the release of BioShock Infinite in 2013. The current project, announced in 2019 as being developed by Cloud Chamber, has been very quiet since then. The latest news reveals serious internal struggles behind the scenes.

According to people familiar with the situation, the biggest problem identified by 2K Games executives was the game’s story. The narrative reportedly needs major improvements and will be completely rewritten in the coming months. This harsh feedback has led to sudden and dramatic changes in Cloud Chamber’s leadership. Studio head Kelley Gilmore has reportedly been removed from her position.

Additionally, creative director Hogarth de la Plante has been moved to a publishing role, taking him away from direct involvement in the game’s creative development. These leadership changes have also affected the rest of the development team. In a recent company-wide meeting, Cloud Chamber employees were told the studio needs to become more agile and efficient.

This announcement, along with the sudden leadership shake-up, has caused a lot of stress among the team. Many are worried that layoffs could happen soon as the studio tries to reorganize. The mood at Cloud Chamber is tense, with developers unsure about their jobs as the project faces so many challenges.

The development of a new BioShock game has been far from smooth. The current project at Cloud Chamber is just one part of a long and troubled process that has lasted over a decade. The game has moved between different studios before finally landing with the team in Montreal and Novato. Fans have quietly wondered why the game is taking so long, and now it seems the delays are due to deep internal issues.

Making matters worse, it has also been revealed that 2K Games was working on a remake of the original BioShock game. However, this project was quietly canceled earlier this year, disappointing fans who were eager for any new content from the series. The decision to cancel the remake, while the new main game is also struggling, shows just how difficult it has been for 2K and its studios to bring BioShock back into the spotlight.

When asked about the development problems, 2K Games released a statement acknowledging the situation while trying to reassure fans. A 2K spokesperson said, “We are working hard to set BioShock up for the best possible future. Right now, we have a good game, but we are committed to delivering a great one. We are working closely with leadership at the studio to define this path.”
